School is a place where the already cultivated habits are reinforced and discipline gets added to the child's behaviour. It is a place where attitudes, beliefs and values of a child get refined. A school plays a crucial role in shaping the personality of a child.
Horace Mann is considered the inventor of the concept of schools. He was a pioneer in bringing educational reforms into society. As schools become such important institutions in the life of our children, it becomes important to know the procedures involved in opening a new school. Here’s an insight into the step by step guide for opening a new school in India.
The step by step procedure
Opening a new school is not at all an easy venture. It requires planning & organising. Coordinated team effort is an inevitable element for this endeavour. A new school which is supposed to be a lifetime opportunity in any city, has to be designed and developed in the best way so as to greatly mould a coming generation.
As the primary step, the school board must acquire a 'Memorandum of Association' from the educational trust. The land for establishing a school may be purchased or leased. If the school already possesses land, they must get it approved for educational use by the municipal and the education department of the concerned state.
The following details are considered as important as well-
- Societies Recognition Act, 1860
- Registration Certificate of Society
- Essentiality Certificate DoE
- Certificate of Recognition MCD/ DoE,
- Certificate of Upgradation DoE
- Certificate of Affiliation
- Certificate of MCD MCD.
A School must have its affiliation from the State Board. It doesn't matter if the school is eventually affiliated to CBSE, ICSE, IB or any other board.
The Infrastructure
Once these formalities are done, the next step is to set up the infrastructure. Here are the basic infrastructure requirements to be considered for a new school.
The building/s should be south-facing, so that adequate sunlight can enter into the room in the winter and cannot enter directly in the summer. There should be space for free circulation of air, proper light and a minimum area for the number of school students the school plans to accommodate.
The height of the classroom/s should not be less than 3 '00 m and should be measured at any point from the surface of the floor to the lowest point of the ceiling. The minimum size should be 8 m.x 8 m. fully equipped and with a reading room facility.
The Recruitment process
Once the building and classrooms are ready, it is time for filling the workforce. Then comes the process of recruitment and staffing. This is a significant phase.
Even though the size of staff differs from school to school, there are certain people who are mandatory to run the institution. This phase focuses on the recruitment of Superintendents, School Principals, Chief Academic Officers, Assistant Principal, Academic Deans or Post-secondary Education Administrators, High School Teachers, Elementary School Teachers, and Middle School Teachers. The steps for the admission process are also done here. Students are the lifeblood that is going to run the institutional activities.
The school principal sets the tone and culture for the entire school. Each and every person associated is equally important and must be carefully chosen and retained.
The Budget
Next comes the budget. It might also differ depending on the size and type of the school. But we need to know the basic budget requirement for opening a new school. Click here to know how much does it cost to start a school in India.
